The first church on the site of the current cathedral was dedicated to St. Peter and mentioned in 1208. Between 1328 and 1378, a new church was built under the direction of the master builder Wiland based on St. Elizabeth's in Wrocław. The church was consecrated in 1348 and received St. Paul as its second patron.

In 1522, Duke Frederick II of Liegnitz embraced the Reformation and the church building was converted to Protestant worship. A fire severely damaged the building in 1835, and it was restored by the famed architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel. Further renovations were made in the 1890s to a design by Johannes Otzen, who fundamentally altered the exterior with an ornate neo-Gothic decoration.

Following Germany's loss in WWII, the city of Liegnitz was awarded to Poland and renamed Legnica. The new authorities transferred the structure to the Catholic Church, who made only minor alterations to the structure. The church was selected as the seat of the newly-created Diocese of Legnica in 1992 by Pope John Paul II.
