Add PhotosIn 1832, a large band of Potawatomis, accompanied by three Sauks, attacked the William Davis Homestead, in Earl Township, La Salle County, Illinois, now the site of Shabbona County Park. The assault was retaliatory, as Davis had built a dam, which eliminated the Potawatomis source for fish and in addition, he had battered a member of the tribe for damaging the dam. Having disregarded a warning of the impending attack given by Chief Shabbona, fifteen settlers were killed and their bodies horribly mutilated in what became known as the Indian Creek Massacre, the most infamous incident of the Blackhawk War.
Rachel and her sister, Sylvia (Hall) Horn, were among the few to survive the massacre. Having just witnessed the atrocities committed upon their family and friends, the two sisters were then abducted and held captive for eleven days—mostly in Black Hawk's camp—before negotiations led to their release.
