"Atoka Church Marks 100th Year - The Catholic Church has a colorful history in the Atoka area. St. Patrick's, Atoka, Indian Territory, was the first Catholic Church built in Indian and Oklahoma Territories. The small, wooden-frame, single story building was erected in 1872 east of the Missouri, Kansas and Texas (MKT) railroad tracks. In present-day Atoka, the structure was bounded on the north by B Street and on the west by Indiana Street.
St. Patrick's was built under the direction of Father Michael Smyth, a 36-year-old missionary priest from Fort Smith who made monthly rounds in Indian Territory. Since most of the parishioners were poor and materials scarce, the church was a simple one. It was unfurnished, and the altar was made from dry goods boxes.
Most of the first Catholics in Atoka were Irishmen who settled there after working on the MKT railroad line between McAlester, I.T., and Denison, Tex. The parish also included some traders and Choctaw Indians. Father Smyth, who was born in Ireland, visited Atoka once a month. He performed the first marriage in a Catholic church in Indian Territory: between Susan Smallwood and John A. Dillon. "
