The Darells of Calehill were a prominent family in the area and the North aisle became well known for the monuments to members of the Darell family that were buried there
It fell into disrepair after 1713, when the Roman Catholic side of the family inherited Calehill and built their own Church, so support was withdrawn from the Anglican Church.
It was a building of sandstone with two aisles, two chancels with a steeple at the west end.
The steeple is said to have been built in Henry VII's reign. The Victorians carried out major repairs in the 19th century with new windows and oak paneling.
On 16th August 1944 during WW2, St Mary's received a direct hit from a flying bomb known as a doodlebug. With only the damaged tower and parts of the chancel wall surviving, the bells were removed and stored. The remains still stand today.
There are a few graves still standing but most are too badly damaged to read
It stands on a site further upstream from the village, near Chart Court. The new church built in 1955 is now within the village.
