The Cemetery is located on the Mangum, Arthur –Land Grant # NC284. File 880. Patent Book 32/432. Entry #543. Recorded at ODB 2/339. Granted in 1780. 550 ac on Dyals Ck of Flat R, adj his own land, incl where he lives, SCC: Anthony Cozart & Thos Goss. The land was originally settled in the early 1760's when Arthur became the first Mangum to settle in Orange County. The Cemetery was "discovered" and cleared in 2017. The official dedication ceremony was held on November 3, 2018. The land is now owned by NCSU Hill Forest. There are about 12 or more unmarked graves, some marked by upright rectangular rocks and some are just depressions in the soil. It is believed that the free African American Patriot, Preacher, Teacher, and Mentor John Chavis (1763-1838) is also buried here. Chavis was a friend and contemporary of Willie Person Mangum, (1792-1861) U. S. State Senator and grandson of Arthur Mangum. Willie Person Mangum is buried in a marked, private cemetery about 1000 yards away.
