About 1/4 mile south of New Vernon Church the dirt road appears to cut through the middle of a large cemetery, now lost in the woods. Tombstones are visible in the woods on both the east and west sides of the dirt road. Tombstones on the west side of the road were documented in 1963 by the Sturdivant Museum Association of Selma, Inc. as "Vernon Church". There is no church, nor any other building, at this site in 2018. No documentation has been found for graves on the east side of Co. Rd. 180. Both sides of the road are very wooded, and the cemetery appears abandoned. Tombstones have fallen over, and many are covered with moss and mildew, or downed trees. Some stones are so worn they are unreadable. There are many sunken places that are obviously graves, but have nothing, not even rocks, marking them. In the west cemetery, there are a couple of wrought iron fences around 2 family plots, and trees have fallen, ruining the fencing in several places.
The cemetery on the west side of the road was owned in 2017 by the Crisman family. The cemetery on the east side of the road is owned by New Vernon Cumberland Cemetery, who also owns the New Vernon Church and graveyard 1/4 mile north.
