Originally a Catholic Chapel built around the 1500's it was taken over by the Protestant Land Owners in the 1600-1700's.
Many of the local Protestant "Planter" Families attended this chapel, mainly the Herbert family of Castleisland, Currans & Kilcoe/Kilcow/Kilkaugh, and were buried here. In the mid-1800's there were troubles brewing between the local Herbert JP and the local Catholic tenants and he was shot one day on his way home from court. He was buried in his family's tomb but the tomb was said to be often desecrated by the disgruntled locals and the family eventually had his body (and possibly other family members) reinterred at the Arabella/Ballymacelligott Churchyard where the Chute and Sealy (relations and also Planter Families) families are also buried although his headstone still remains at the Ardcrone Cemetery.
Shortly after this time it appears the old graveyard was soon being used mainly for Catholic Burials and there are even some very recent burials in the past decade or two. Many of the very old family tombs appear to have been vandalized, are falling apart, are over-grown and difficult to decipher or locate any of the headstones.
