Poplar Hall
In 1761, Thurmer Hoggard, a planter and ship's carpenter, bought 800 acres of land and named it Broad Creek Plantation. By 1779, it had developed into 1,200 acres of cotton and tobacco.
A descendant who inherited the property changed the name to Poplar Hall for the rows of Lombardy poplar trees that lined the pathway to the house from the river.
The land and the home stayed in the Hoggard family for eight generations - 190 years
The historical home is still standing at 400 Stuart Circle
at the end of Poplar Halls Drive
