This burial tomb is off Washington Street in South Walpole, in the center of the Walpole Department of Public Works parking lot. In the 1980's a new facade was constructed for this tomb, and a new granite marker was placed over the door. It is believed the only person buried in this tomb is Abigail Hartshorn (Abigail died in 1824). However, Capt. Lewis Hartshorn and his wife Suky appear not to have a grave anywhere else in town. Capt. Lewis Hartshorn’s daughters, Amandy and Susan are buried next to their grandfather, Benjamin Hartshorn, in the Old Burial Ground. Their son, Otis, has a plot for his family in Terrace Hill Cemetery. It is very possible Capt. Lewis and Susanna “Suky” (Fales) Hartshorn are buried in this tomb with Abigail. Lewis died in Walpole Dec. 26, 1852 @88 yrs, and Suky died in Walpole Aug. 14, 1856 @ 90yr. Another probable burial is Lewis & Sukey's son William, who died in 1842. It is said Capt. Lewis Hartshorn constructed this tomb on his property for his mother as she thought the location was a beautiful spot.
