"Willow Rounds (Pondera), the oldest white settlement in the county, was named for the willow-circled parks near the Marias River. For centuries this was a winter campsite for the Piegans, so it was selected as the site for the first fur trading post above the mouth of the river in 1848; Augustin Armell built the post. Later it was a stopping place on the Healy Trail between Fort Shaw and Canada's Fort MacLeod." Roberta Carkeek Cheney, Names on the Face of Montana, The Story of Montana's Place Names, Mountain Press Publishing Company, Missoula, 1983.
"Individual picturesque wooden fences deteriorated and cattle were trampling the graves until, with the help of the Conrad Historical Society, we cleared it and erected a new fence. Would be pillagers have been sternly discouraged, and now all is quiet and peaceful. Friendly sage, emitting its ancient sacred incense, folds itself quietly about the graveyard's secrets blending them forever into the Spirit of Willow Rounds." Napi's Lookout, The Story of Willow Rounds, by Dorothy Hamaker, page 48.
"There was also a cemetery at Willow Rounds; although the last burial was made in 1918 the cemetery is still kept up by some of the old timers." Shelby Backgrounds, Shelby History Group, Montana Institute of the Arts, page 116.
