The graveyard dates from the 15th century and was used for burials until the 1950s. Its name comes from the townland Ballyara (O'Hara).
One burial of note in Ballyara Graveyard is that of a horse called The Pride of Ballyara, who won the Gold Cup in 1845. His owners, the Mullarkey family, used the winnings to buy food for starving people in the area. The horse has a headstone in the graveyard.
