Add PhotosThe history of the Wiley Cemetery cannot be separated from the history of the land on which it is situated - property owned by Absalom Wiley by the late 1800's, and divided in 1891 by his will between his two sons, John and Gaston. Although John is the only one whose burial here is confirmed by the presence of a legible gravestone, it is likely that all three men were laid to rest here, together with wives and assorted family members.
The earliest known burials here took place in the 1880's, but a review of land records, to determine when Absalom took possession of the property, and to identify the previous owner, could shed light on earlier burials and the potential identity of those who lie beneath the silent fieldstones and the inscribed gravestones that have been erased by time.
The Historical Society provides the following description of the location: "From Elgood take Route 9 to Chestnut Knob and then take a left onto Route 22 to Lovern. Take a left onto Route 22/2 and then take the next dirt road to the left to the Lovern farm. Bear to the right through a field. Passing the Lovern Cemetery, go on until you come to a field. The cemetery is located on the old Pyrhus 'Mack' Bowling farm." [Note: Mr. Bowling was the son-in-law of Gaston Wiley. On the 1940 census, the location of the Bowling farm was described as Big Island Creek. In 1930, it was Cashers Hill.]
While not easy to locate or get to, the cemetery is well kept (2017).
