Add PhotosBurials could have begun as early as 1816-1817, when Archelaus Dickerson first settled in this area, and continued into the early twentieth century.
When the cemetery was surveyed by Myra Ware Williams Crenshaw in the 1960s, only two inscribed markers were visible. This was her survey:
-----------------------------------------
Two graves on a hill near Ollie Wilkerson's house, about 1 1/2 miles north of Manningham & near Cedar Creek:
"Erected by the Woodmen of the World"
(W.O.W. insignia)
T. J. Dickerson
Born Feb. 3, 1860
Died Jan. 24, 1904
Sarah T. Dickerson
Born Jan. 16, 1838
Died Oct. 8, 1911
(verse follows)
-----------------------------------------------
Those two grave markers still exist today (2016), and other graves are marked by field stones. Since the Dickerson family lived for many decades in one location, and burials in the family cemetery continued for nearly -- or over -- one hundred years, it's fairly certain that Archelaus Dickerson, his wife Mary Ray Ogle/Ogly, and various other close relatives who died from 1817 to the early 1900s are interred in this pioneer family cemetery.
In a 1974 letter to Myra Ware Williams Crenshaw, the late Jack Burnett of Greenville, Alabama (a Dickerson descendant), wrote this list of people whom he knew or had been told were buried in the old family cemetery:
These people are in Dickerson Cem.
Archelaus - The big cedar tree is at the head of his grave
His wife Mary -
Elizabeth - stepdaughter
John S. Dickerson - Arches son
Sarah J. - James wife
T. J. - James son
Louise - John S. daughter
Mary - John S. wife
There are some Butts people there, too. Mr. Will Crenshaw helped bury Mr. Dan Hall there. Mr. Will said "He was the last person buried there about 53 yrs. ago."
------------------------------------------------
The Butler County Historical Society cemetery files include a survey of the Dickerson Cemetery, noting: "This census taken by Jack Burnett in January 1974."
