Benjamin Williams Plantation Cemetery
Bryant, Yalobusha County, Mississippi, USA
Benjamin and Tabitha Williams, their children Peter Turley Williams and Elizabeth Williams Perry, and son or grandson James Williams, are the only marked graves in this small family cemetery located on the former Benjamin Williams plantation.
There are or were "visible mounds" where "four or five" additional graves were noted in 1954 but no readable stones. Some other sunken graves probably belong to slaves of the family. (The Williams Family, 1954, by John Ben Perry Jr., p.6.)
Cemeteries of Grenada County, Mississippi and Surrounding Areas, vol. 1 (1987) by Frances G. Martin, p. 26, contains a transcription made March 1958 by Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Martin which is identical to Perry's earlier transcription except for the order being shown as Benjamin, Peter, Tabitha, James and Elizabeth.
"There are several unmarked graves in this family cemetery. Most of the remaining stones are broken and have fallen over." Location description is given: "Go West from Coffeeville on Hwy 7; turn South at historical marker and go approximately 4 miles; on old Oxchickima Hill."
Yalobusha County, Mississippi Original Land Patents Books 1 and 2 by Francis Marion Duke III and Chris B. Morgan, p. 189, shows the (Benjamin) Williams Cemetery in Township 24, Range 5 East, Section 25. To the west is section 28 where President James K. Polk had patented land in 1842 (p.61). The original patentees of Section 25 were Thomas G. Ellis, Thomas Barnard, and R.J. Walker. None of these are shown as residing in the area in the 1850 census, by which time Benjamin and Tabitha Williams had acquired their plantation there.
