Chandler-Rice Cemetery was once part of the homestead land pension granted to Lewis DeShong and his sons Jesse and Jacob. Jessie Franklin DeShong, his brother Jacob, and their families settled in Gwinnett in 1840. Their father, Lewis DeShong, joined them in 1842, and brought the rest of the family. They had a large farm in Gwinnett, part of which is now DeShong Park. There are 5 family members buried on what was once the DeShong family farm (now Chandler-Rice Cemetery on private property). Specifically, Minerva Boyles DeShong (Jessie's first wife) died 1841-2, Jessie's toddler son, James Dickey DeShong, died 1843, Jessie's mother, Elizabeth Rhody DeShong, died 1847. Also buried with them are Jim Wallace and Basil DeShong, nephew of Jessie DeShong.
