South Parade Wesleyan Chapel was opened in 1777, replacing a small chapel in Church Lane, which in turn had replaced the first Methodist preaching room in Halifax at Cow Green.
John Wesley laid the foundation stone, preached at the opening, and continued to visit and preach there annually until shortly before his death.
In the 1870s the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company attempted to compulsorily purchase the large burial ground in order to expand their adjacent goods yard. The case was taken to the House of Lords by the Chapel Trustees, which resulted in the Railway Company being required to buy the whole site, which it did in 1878.
South Parade Chapel therefore closed in 1880. The graves in the burial ground were removed and transferred to a dedicated area of Stoney Royd Cemetery, where they were arranged in an identical layout.
The chapel building was rented out for a variety of purposes until it was finally demolished in 1966.
The map location is approximate as all traces of the defunct cemetery have been removed.
