Nine Burial Ground #1
Also known as Nein Burial Ground #1
Oley, Berks County, Pennsylvania, USA
Oley Township: North side of Oley Turnpike, one mile east of Limekiln.
Size: Area best broken up into 3 major sections. Size is irregular and very large.
History: Casper Neun came to America in 1737 and settled on this land. Area of quarry was once Nine property, and other houses and operations existed beyond the present Mine Rd. The Knabb estate and burial grounds exist on the other side of the Oley Turnpike, and the large Snyder site exists just to the west. To the east but not immediate are other family burial grounds and then later the Spangsville church cemetery. Research continues relative to identity of burials. (PCC, ps. 15, 117 and MHBA, ps. 1586 and 1671)
Recorded deaths:
Nine Casper died in 1788 [legal records]
Barbara died November 19, 1800 (86-3-16) [Schwarzwald death records]
Observations: Evaluated by descendants at 1997 reunion week-end. This is more than a family graveyard. Burials surround the house and continue under additions that were made to the barn area. Measuring stopped at electric fence at south end of barn, 168' from fence to middle of the road; area includes mostly macadam driveway. The datestone on the Snyder section of the barn is 1881. It would
appear that the Snyder barn was built over graves. Even though a Snyder addition was built to the Nein house, it is not apparent that burials were underneath, but it is possible. In the area in front of the house there is a directional change in the pattern of burials; here
the burials are east to west, and before and after they are north to south. This is approximately up to an electric unit next to the barn where there is a 12' wide path free of burials. There are 15 rows of burials after the 12' path. There is also a path in front of house door in east/west pattern. The area up to the house has 15 rows, then 11 rows east to west and then 10 more rows north to south. In some places we found an indication of 17 abreast but this may vary. Burials continue in front of the entrance to the new Snyder barn. This is how we determined that burials continue under the side of the barn. Even though there is a good grade up to the barn entrance, burials could still be detected up to about 12' from the barn doors. This area has 5 rows of 12 and continues to the end of the Snyder addition. The Snyder barn measures 71' wide. The third area includes both side yards up to the electric fence area. Pattern of burials in both is north to south. The spring house area is 31' x 43'. The yard area on the other side of the house has burials beginning approximately 12' from the house out to the road. Burials continue to the other side of Mine Rd.
