Custard Burial Ground
Saint Lawrence, Berks County, Pennsylvania, USA
Size: 80' x 120'
History: According to REK, the Custard farm "later became known as the Koch, Bush & Company farm and lay east of the Endlich farm in Lower Alsace township. The boundary line between these two farms was almost identical with the boundary line of the two townships. In 1903 the borough of Mt. Penn was formed out of Lower Alsace and the Endlich farm was included. The southern boundary of the farm is Butter Lane. [MHBC p. 408] It is quite possible that this graveyard site was associated with an early mill on the Antietam, possibly the Hartman Mill shown on the 1775 map of Exeter in Pendelton's The Oley Valley Heritage - The Colonial
Years: 1700-1775.

Observations: Indicate 15 rows of 34 abre.ast laying east to west. "This land was worked and used heavily, and the presence of many
animals is evident. The area was also used occasionally for very large week-end celebrations where many people came from far and wide, and the preparations of smoking meats and preparing food was a gigantic production. The manufacture of a product involving wood and metal took place, and it seems canoes or boats took wood or a finished product down the Antietam for distribution or processing. Some building in the area was used as a hospital. Seems to be a hub of commerce." [GB]
