St. James Church was built in 1774 to 1775 and is believed to be the oldest Anglican church in Liverpool. The church opened for Divine service on June 4, 1775 but was not assigned a parish until 1844.

Burials were performed in the churchyard immediately surrounding the church. In 1898 Liverpool Corporation was appointed the churchyard and subsequently they ceased burials, removed the headstones and transformed the churchyard into an ornamental garden.
