Old city cemetery of Malaga, Spain, closed to further interments in 1987. It is located in the Cross Shrine district in the west of the city, being transformed into a funeral park in memory of the fateful events of the Spanish Civil War. Thousands of Malagans (estimate is 4500) were shot at the cemetery and buried in mass graves. Many other mass grave burials were exhumed in 1937 following the entry into the city of General Franco's troops. The wall against which the thousands were shot has been preserved as a memorial. The old cemetery section is in a neglected state as the memorial to the mass murdered has become the focus of the site.
It was closed in 1987, and its lands are currently being enabled for the new San Rafael Park. It is located in the Cruz de Humilladero district, in the west of the city, being transformed into a funerary park in memory of the fatalities that occurred in it during the Spanish Civil War. It is the place of historical memory.
The graves with registered people were transferred by their relatives to the current Cemetery Park of Malaga. The corpses of the mass graves are in a single pantheon. The pantheon where the remains are deposited, in individual boxes, is covered by a large marble pyramid in which the names of more than 4100 people were shot. This mausoleum was inaugurated in early 2014.
