The chancel is simply a Bible on an alter. Behind the Chancel is a large window which looks out over the Evenlode valley.
The oldest parts of the Church of England parish church of All Saints are Norman; in the north wall of the nave, a round-headed lancet window from this period survives The chancel arch was built in the 13th or 14th century and even when rebuilt in Tudor times, was not added to. Most of the current windows are Perpendicular Gothic. In the18th century box pews were added and a south porch was built in the 19th century.
In order for worshippers to see the altar, a squint on the south side of the chancel archway was added in the 15th Century.
18th Century worshippers sat as they still do today, in box pews and listened to sermons from the Georgian two-dicker pulpit which is complete with wig-stand. A larger (longer) pew was for the squire, longer but equally uncomfortable, boxes for the farmers, and benches at the back for the farm-workers, woodsmen and domestics. These benches may also have been intended for the quire.
It is possible that the local people were immortalized in the corbel heads: a mood, a bearded man, a lady with a head dress.
Tablet to right of door, inscribed: "THIS CHURCH - OF ALL SAINTS/SHORTHAMPTON - WAS RESTORED IN 1903 (THE REMAINS OF ITS/OLDER MURAL PAINTINGS, WHICH/HAD BEEN HIDDEN FOR SOME 350/YEARS BEING THEN UNCOVERED),/AND WAS REOPENED FOR THE/SERVICE OF GOD ON NOVEMBER 1ST,/ALL SAINTS DAY". The 1902-3 restoration was carried out at the expense of Mr. V.J. Watney of Cornbury Park (q.v.).
