During a labor strike by the coal miners, the mine owners brought in southern Negro workers to break the strike.
These families were housed in Whitebreast Township and their settlement became known as Coontown. They then established a small cemetery of their own, east of the township line road.
Today, there are no visible signs of this final resting place for an unknown number of people who lived and died in East Cleveland.
