Add PhotosEstablished August 12, 1866, Fort C. F. Smith was a United States Army post in Montana Territory. Originally named Fort Ransom, it was located on a bluff on the right bank of the Big Horn River some eight miles above the mouth of Rotten Grass Creek. The fort was abandoned in July 29, 1868 and subsequently burned to the ground by the Sioux Indians. In 1892 seventeen sets of remains from the Post Cemetery were disinterred and reburied the Custer National Cemetery, Crow Agency, Montana.
