Only a few field stones.
Dr. Vertigan settled near Mouth of Wilson Creek and started practicing medicine as a young doctor.
He had a wife and 7 young children.
He and his 7 children contracted small pox and died.
His wife survived and married a Dr. Wagg, at Grassy Creek, NC-VA.
Community residents burned the Vertigan home to rid the area of the virus.
FROM NEW RIVER NOTES
GARY PAISLEY NOTES 2015
The smallpox epidemic occurred in 1870. It was quick and killed many. But there are no recorded deaths.
A lot of the victims were from transient families who came to Grayson after the CW. So, by chance you are looking for people who disappeared about that time this might have been their fate.
This is a cemetery, now largely overgrown, across the creek and US 58 from the Round House. It was next to the Dr Ezra Vertigan house and was used for smallpox victims. Only 2 graves are marked. Dr Vertigan and his son. Some say there are 50-60 graves, but I only saw abt 20 when I was a boy.
