The Hudson Bay Company (HBC) established Fort Nisqually nearby in 1833 as the first European settlement and trading post on Puget Sound. In 1843 the fort moved upland to this site. During the period of the fort's operations, burials took place in scattered locations throughout the prairie.
After the US took possession of the region, the fort continued operations until the HBC sold its land holdings in what is now western Washington State.
For many years this land was owned by the Dupont Co. More recently the area was purchased by the Weyerhaeuser Real Estate Co and developed as "Northwest Landing." Prior to development, researchers and archaeologists located and moved as many burials as they could to this enclosure, dedicated in 1990.
In addition to the named burials, there are several markers for unknowns, including both Europeans and Native American burials.
