Hickory Flat Cemetery
Muscoda, Grant County, Wisconsin, USA
An article by H.E. Roethe in Fennimore Times dated Dec. 31, 1930 titled "The School at Hickory Flat" indicates "several Wachtel children and a number of children of Frank Marks" are buried in this cemetery. In addition, Angeline Drone, wife of A.W. Drone is buried here "also two infant sons of hers and a child of the second Mrs. Drone."
"The building (Hickory Flat School) was intended for use for a schoolhouse and church combined, and in the early days the dead were buried in the church yard. That accounts for the graves in the yard of the Hickory Flat schoolhouse in such close proximity to the school building. Sixty five years ago (ca.1865)Rev. Benjamin Winters, a United Brethren minister bought land here and gave an acre to the district for a schoolhouse and a church...Rev. Edward Wachtel, a Lutheran pastor, who preached at Muscoda and a number of outlying charges, held services in it for seven or eight years, and it is his children who are buried here."

In the 1860's (ca.1865)Pastor Wachtel served "Hickory Flat Lutheran Church," a congregation of people in the Hickory Flat area who eventually formed St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Muscoda in 1870, and from that congregation Christ Lutheran Church, Pine Knob (rural Highland)was formed in 1895. The latter eventually purchased the old Methodist Episcopal Church building in the village of Highland and established the congregation there, which still exists, as does St. Peter's in Muscoda.
Also in the 1860's (ca. 1869)Reverend Doctor John Zwolanek served the congregation of people at Hickory Flat, later serving a Czech congregation about 2 miles southwest, Blue River Valley Lutheran Church, now simply called Blue River Valley Church. He died in 1890, and is buried in that cemetery. Pastor Wachtel went on to serve a congregation in Iowa, and is buried there at New Hampton.

From Church Membership records, Evangeline (nee Clark) Drone was born November 16, 1847 at Steuben County, New York. She was married to Andreas Washington Drone who was born March 11, 1832 in Lehi or Barks (sic. "Berks") County Pennsylvania. Surely this is "Angeline Drone, wife of A.W. Drone" mentioned in the Fennimore Times article. Online website "Andrew Washington Drone, Sr. Family Center" indicates a birth year of 1845 for Angeline. Andrew Washington Drone and Angeline Drone had a number of children, as did Andrew and his second wife.
From Confirmation Certificates, it is known that siblings Christian Blabaum and Mary (nee Blabaum) Schwingle, the two oldest children of Henry and Sophia (nee Stahman) Blabaum, were confirmed at Hickory Flat Lutheran Church in 1866. According to a history of Christ Lutheran Church, Highland, Wisconsin, they walked from their home a few miles east of Highland on Pompeys Pillar Road to Hickory Flat School/Church for catechetical instruction. (Approximately 10-12 miles to the northwest "the way the crow flies.") They would spend a night or two with the George Schlump family, and then return to their home. It is unknown from oral history how often they made the trek.

May 2015 Update: Two individuals indicate there are 10-12 tombstones. However, only one large tombstone has been found listing Angeline Drone and her two sons, namely Jacob Frederick and Frederick. The large tombstone is located approximately 50 feet south of the school/church foundation. Three other small white marble slabs have been located, possibly for the Marks or Wachtel children, but there is nothing legible on the stones. All total, from different sources, there seems to be 12 individuals buried here.
According to a local historian: The Hickory Flat School closed in about 1940 when there was but one student, namely, Junior Schamberger of Muscoda. The building was then dismantled by Glen Harms, a carpenter of Muscoda, and was used to build a garage on Catherine Street between Minnesota and Ohio Streets. An old photo of the school and more information about it can be found in the family tree book "Brothers Harms" on display at Highland Historical Society. The Duffey Stories at UW-Platteville Wisconsin Room may also reveal some information about the school.
