4003 Morgan Mill Road
Monroe, NC 28110
The history of Union Springs AME Zion can be traced back to August 15, 1877. Union Springs is one of the oldest churches where the membership is of African descent. It is recorded that three lay leaders, Samuel Williams, Edesell Cuthbertson, and Daniel Tomberlin, purchased two acres of land including a spring on Morgan Mill Road in Monroe, NC. The church derived its name from the spring on that site. The cornerstone states that the present edifice was erected in 1921. The old cemetery is located in the rear of the church.
There are only 10 headstones remaining behind the church building, although there are 17 readable stones across the street between Emmanuel Baptist Church at 3816 Morgan Mill Road and directly north of the church behind a house in the woods. The stones are scattered among the trees and vegetation at both locations.
While researching many of the headstones behind the house next to Emmanuel Baptist Church and the associated death certificates the burial location was stated as Bethel Church. Research is currently underway to find out more information regarding Bethel Church and the relationship to Union Springs AME Zion Church.
