Founded in the 12th century as ‘St Mary de Hull' or ‘St Mary de la Hulle.' It was severely damaged by the Great Fire of London in 1666. Sir Christopher Wren rebuilt the church's interior and east end, retaining the church's medieval walls on three sides and the west tower. Further renovation took place in the 18th and 19th centuries. A fire in 1988 severely damaged the building, requiring the roof and ceiling to be rebuilt.
There was a ‘Great Churchyard' to the north of St Mary-at-Hill charging 8d to bury an adult and 4d to bury a child in 1523. Burials within the chapels cost 16s 8d and in the nave 8s 4d at this time.
The churchyard was closed to burials in 1846 and human remains were exhumed and moved to West Norwood Cemetery in S.E. London. The churchyard is now a small courtyard garden. The church crypt and vaults were also cleared of around 3000 bodies between 1892 -94. Some slabs and memorials still remain in place but there are no skeletons beneath.
