Bald Ridge Cemetery
Hagerstown, Wayne County, Indiana, USA
This cemetery appears in the 1893 Atlas for Wayne County, Indiana, and is actually named on the map. It is located in the northeast quarter of section 30 in Jefferson Township, and about a mile west of the Salem Baptist Church and cemetery. The grounds would have been in the middle of a field.
Using modern roads as a reference: it would have been 1/4 mile south of highway 38 and 1/4 mile west of Jacksonburg Road and not far from Oser Creek.
There is the possibility that today the site is known by another name as it could have been a family graveyard.
Being so close to the Salem Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, there may have only been a few burials at Bald Ridge. (Salem Church and Cemetery date to 1816 - the very early settlement of Wayne County).
I do not know if Bald Ridge still exist and have never known there to be a burial ground visible here. It is probable that it has been lost over time. Today the only approach to the site is by crossing private land. It is a distance from any public road. A small grouping of trees has existed in the middle of the field for some time; a possible hint to the exact location.
The Oser Creek which crosses the property has had its course straighten in more recent times. On the GPS map I have pinpointed an approximate location of where the cemetery should be located in relation to the old creek bed.
There are two groups of trees in this field so it may be either one. As of 2014, part of the property is owned by an Amish family. If any tombstones exist they will not be disturbed due to the respect the Amish have toward the dead.
Any information on this burial site would be appreciated.
