Jonason Farm Cemetery
Stark, Chisago County, Minnesota, USA
The Jonason Farm Cemetery is a private cemetery located in Fish Lake Township on the farm owned by R. and C. Ehlert, west and north of Stark, MN. The property was originally homesteaded by Anders and Katherine Jonson, who are buried in the Fish Lake Lutheran Cemetery at Stark.
There are four stones still visible, and the possibility of as many as eight persons altogether, the remainder being in unmarked graves. Two of the persons, with only their initials on the stone, were Eric and Margrita Helsen/Helsene. However, they also have stones in the Fish Lake Lutheran Cemetery, so their remains may have been moved at some time in the past.
Jonas Jonason and Greta Lisa Jonason, presumably husband and wife, are also identified by stones. Jonas' dates are 1815-1902 and Greta's are 1818-1878.
Chisago county resident Myrtle Anderson Sandquist told historian Robert Porter that she remembers three siblings (Anderson children) being buried there. Unfortunately, there is no physical evidence of their burials.
There are virtually hundreds of small children who died of cholera, diphtheria and consumption in the 1870's, 1880's, and 1890's, sometimes several from one family in less than a week. We can imagine that many of those infants could have been buried on family farm cemeteries such as this one. There are death records of these children but neither their burial location was recorded nor cemetery stones have been found in the traditional cemeteries.
