The cemetery is located within the site of a former Augustinian Abbey, which was closed following the dissolution of the monasteries under Henry 8th. The monastery itself is believed to have been demolished in the early 1700's.
The entrance to the cemetery is difficult to find on Abbey Street.
Access is via an archway in the centre of a terrace of houses/shops, to the right (south-west) of "The Abbey Stores", and is opposite a pub "The Hogan Stand".
Go through the arch and walk down to the end of the lane. There is a gate which is locked, but it is not too difficult to climb over the gate.
The cemetery is no longer in general use, the most recent burial being that of James Archbold in 1986.
About 25 headstones were illegible due to weathering.
