Add PhotosThe Old Bowne Family Burial Ground was located on what is presently the southeast corner of the intersection of Bowne Street and Northern Boulevard in Flushing, Queens County, New York, on the former property of John Bowne (1627 — 1695).
═════════════════════════════════════════════════
▫ Years of use: From 1665 to about 1800.
▫ Cemetery disposition: Destroyed.
═════════════════════════════════════════════════
The former cemetery site is now occupied by apartment buildings and small businesses.
Some of the remains were moved to the Bowne-Parsons Family Burial Ground after 1800, and subsequently to Flushing Cemetery about 1934.
(Source — The Graveyard Shift: A Family Historian's Guide to New York City Cemeteries, by Carolee R. Inskeep; Ancestry, 2000; p. 24)
Other remains may have been removed to Flushing Meeting House Cemetery when the property containing the family burial ground was sold.
As it was against Quaker custom to mark burials prior to the 1850s, the final disposition of any specific individual remains is speculative.
═════════════════════════════════════════════════
NOTE: John Bowne also donated a separate parcel of land on the south side of Northern Boulevard, called the "Graveyard at Flushing Meeting House" or "Quaker Meeting House Cemetery" of Flushing. This cemetery is located at 137-16 Northern Boulevard, Flushing, New York, and it was established in 1676. For this cemetery, please refer to Quaker Meeting House Cemetery.
