This cemetery was abandoned for years. Beginning in 1997, Rootsweb members initiated a letter-writing campaign to Schuylkill County Prison. In July of 1998, the prison responded by sending a volunteer prison work crew to clean-up the cemetery.
This cemetery is located in an isolated section to the northeast of Old St. George's Cemetery on the Locust Mountain in Shenandoah Heights, Schuylkill County, PA. Traveling north towards Raven Run, the gates for this cemetery can be found on the right, just passed the entrances for New Saint George Cemetery and Old Saint Casimir Cemetery. Those interred here are all of Lithuanian descent, most having come to America from Lithuania itself.
The names of those interred here was compiled by J.R. Zane who walked the cemetery documenting names, dates and inscriptions that were found there. The majority of the headstones are inscribed with year of birth and death only, some listing only year of death, others list name only. Additional information has been added using death certificates and obituaries when available. (Please keep in mind that information on death certificates is not always accurate.) Additional names of those interred here have been garnered from death certificates.
Additional information about the cemetery and the 1998 clean-up can be found in an article published in the "Standard-Speaker", Hazleton, PA, July 25, 1988, page 6.
Every visible marker in this cemetery ( not toppled, face side down) has been photographed as of 06/15/2021. This cemetery is severely neglected. Anyone searching for relatives might also check Lady of Dawn Cemetery #2323551 which is across and about 500 yards a little farther down Cemetery Road.
