They were placed in Gleiwitz I and Gleiwitz II camps. Another group arrived in June, increasing the number of prisoners to 1,111 (740 men, 371 women.) They were mainly Jews; taken from Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Greece, France, Belgium, Holland, Austria and Germany.
In the camp, the men were dealing with the machinery repair and maintenance, as well as with expanding the factory, and women were working processing anthracite, sulfur and oils into soot. This work was carried out indoors, with the temperatures about 60-70 degrees Celsius, wearing tight coveralls. The women prisoners were carrying buckets of waste oil which was 300 degrees Celsius, and pouring it out to a special tank located in the factory area. Accidents and severe burns were frequent. The living conditions in the camp were extremely harsh.
