There are roses planted at the cemetery long ago that still bloom. It is believed the first resident of this graveyard is one of two people. It is either an infant born of Johile Worth Gilbert and Catherine Wingfield Gilbert, or Johile Worth himself. Family stories tell of two infants from that marriage that died and were buried at the Gilbert Family Cemetery, but only one infant death is known.
Johile Worth Gilbert died August 9, 1883 after being kicked in the abdomen by a horse. Then only a few months later his son Martin Buckwalter Gilbert, named after Jolie Worth Gilbert's brother, was born on March 14, 1884, and died four days later on March 18, 1884.
The next death would be Lydia Gilbert, mother of Jolie Worth Gilbert. Lydia passed away between 1885, and 1890. There are other people laid to rest here including two boy of the Swenson Family that were taken by Diphtheria epidemic. They have gravestones saying they died in 1893. There are also graves of five girls that died in the same epidemic. A fence surrounds their graves. There may be others buried at the Gilbert Family Cemetery that died on the Santa Fe Trail. At one time all the graves had limestone markers, but most are now gone.
