aka Miller-Gardner Cemetery
Miller Cemetery is located west of Short Cut Road just inside the city limits of Horse Cave (Hart County) KY about 0.4 mile N of the intersection of Hwy 218 (East Main Street) and Short Cut Road. The cemetery is enclosed in an 8-inch thick concrete wall which is 30' by 50', no gate. The last known interment in this cemetery was 1900.
William Scott Miller, Sr., Elizabeth T. Coats Miller, and 10 of their 13 children are buried in this cemetery.
There is a relatively large "family monument" with the engraved names of Scott and Elizabeth on the surface facing east, 10 children's names on the surface facing west and the names of 2 children and a grandson on the surface facing north.
Individual graves of most members of this family buried here are marked by small stones engraved with Father, Mother, Lizzie, etc. The grave of son Archibald is marked with a typical tombstone.
Note that although the name, DOB, and DOD of sons George and James are engraved on the family monument (surface facing west) they are apparently not buried in this cemetery.
Son George died as an infant while the family was living in Edmonson County, KY; interment unknown.
Son James' interment is not known. James was last found (census) living in NE.
Son William Scott Miller, Jr. is buried Cave Hill Cemetery, Louisville, Jefferson County, KY; FAG Memorial # 116384230.
Scott's sister Eliza and her husband (John A. Gardner) are also buried in this cemetery.
The tombstone of an Elisha Birdwelle is found within the concrete wall, leaning against the west wall. This Birdwelle tombstone appears to have been placed inside the wall in a more recent time, the original grave was possibly located somewhere outside the wall.
A history of the William Scott Miller family may be found in an article by G. Euel Coats and Eileen Gonzales entitled "Miller Cemetery, Elizabeth T. Coats and W. Scott Miller, Sr. Family," published in The Hart County Historical Society Quarterly. Summer 2013, p 8-15.
