In 1888 the Queen of Rumania, (born Elizabeth zu Wied at Schloss Monrepos at Neuwied am Rhein) vacationed in Westerland. The path she walked from her lodgings to the sea was named the Elisabethstrasse in her honor. The walkway took her past this cemetery, and she became its benefactor.
