Smith Settlement Burial Ground is located on Franklin Depot Road, east of Sidney Center on private property formerly the site of "Smith Settlement", Delaware County pioneer, Samuel Smith's farm. Shirley Boyce Goerlich recorded this cemetery in 1989 when granted a brief visit with no photos, as detailed in her 1996 book, "Etched in Stone in Sidney". In May of 2014, my sister, niece and I were allowed a guided tour of the site and found the seven burials that Mrs. Goerlich had noted, plus nine more memorials and at least two blank markers, similar to the stone of initials for Mary A. (Littlewood) Haight and so may not indicate additional burials, but may also be simple markers for burials already accounted for, later replaced by a more elaborate stone. Carr's Creek borders the burial ground to the south and has obviously been widened by periods of flooding. The cemetery's south edge is sunken towards the creek and there is a distinct drop off. Stones teetering on the edge suggest that the burial ground was once much wider and there's no telling how many feet of the cemetery have already been lost to the creek. The property was for sale in 2014 and hopefully future owners and the cemetery association can work together to preserve this piece of Delaware County History and honor those memorialized here.
