Add PhotosThe family burial ground on the old Cheuvront farm was located near where Joseph Cheuvront built his frame house, in the now Good Hope community of Harrison County, West Virginia, not far from the New Bethel Church. The first family member interred there was that of young Joseph Cheuvront, Jr., who died of typhoid fever August 12, 1800. The second burial was his mother, Elizabeth Ellsworth Cheuvront, who died of typhoid fever 6 days later. The last family member buried there was that of Sarah Bollen Cheuvront in 1864, second wife of Reverend Cheuvront.
A total of 13 family members were buried on the farm. Their gravestones have long disappeared. A few years ago, an attempt was made to move their remains, but nothing could be found, except for a lonely button. It appears that through the years this hallowed ground has been destroyed. Needless to say, no remains have been removed to another location.
To honor the memory of the Reverend Joseph Cheuvront, the Daughters of the American Revolution placed a military stone in the Good Hope Masonic Cemetery. This stone would actually be a cenotaph, as his remains are not there.
Sadly, all the grave markers of these 13 dear family members are gone and what a shame. May we never forget them and certainly not "The Father and the Mothers of the American Cheuvronts." Our love and respect.
ONLY these 13 listed here are in this cemetery. NO others should be added: Armanda Cheuvront, Benjamin Cheuvront, Cassandra Cheuvront, Daniel Hitt Cheuvront, Elizabeth Ellsworth Cheuvront, Jane Courtney Cheuvront, Joseph Cheuvront, Jr., Rev. Joseph Louis Cheuvront, Sr., Moses Cheuvront, Sarah Bollen Cheuvront, Simeon Cheuvront, Unknown Powers, and Mrs, Thornhill. ALL GRAVESTONES HAVE BEEN DESTROYED. Louise Taraba 12 May 2014.
