This is actually a virtual cemetery. The cemetery that existed on James Island has long since gone under the waters of the Little Choptank River. The island at one time consisted of about 1500 acres of prime farming land. Now what is left of the island, about 10 acres of beach, pines, some vegetation and soil is no longer inhabited. Many of the early residents of the island lived, died and were buried on the island. As the waters gradually encroached on the island, the burial locations for the old families, Pattison, LeCompte, Geoghegan, and others disappeared under the waters with only a few being relocated to the old brick church (Bethlehem Methodist Church) cemetery on nearby Taylor's Island.

The names that are entered should be considered to be the 'most likely' location for many if these family members to be located. If there are mistakes, and I am sure that there will be, post the problem to the Dorchester County Maryland Genealogy Club Facebook page at
