Cupid's Cay and the settlement of Governor's Harbour, both located near the center of Eleuthera, are the oldest settlements in the Bahamas. St. Patrick's Anglican Church, which stands near the harbour and Haynes Library, is believed to be one of the older churches in the islands - almost 125 years old. The first Anglican church in the settlement was constructed in 1838 by William Bethell, a resident of Governor's Harbour, who built it at his own expense. There are a few gravestones that hug the entrance of the church, and memorial plaques that grace interior walls. They are listed here.
