Williams Cemetery
Berks County, Pennsylvania, USA
Maidencreek Township: In Blandon follow Rt. 73 southeast toward Breezy Corners for2 blocks and turn right on West Wessner Rd. about a half a mile to the road on your left just before Giorgio's mushroom plant and a very sharp curve right after the plant. Turn left off W. Wessner. The small plot surrounded by a stone wall can be seen in the yard on the right behind the plant. Size: 8' x 10'
History: A William Williams received this land in a grant. This site contains the grave of William Williams, a veteran of either the War of 1812 or the Civil War. His horse is said to be buried with him. Because there were a number of William Williams in this area of the county, it is difficult to sort out the activities. There is a record of William Williams from Maidencreek with the Berks County
Veterans Bureau where he served as a wagon master in the 5th Co. 5th Battalion in the PA Militia. William died in 1868,.and in his will requests no patriotic fanfare at his service. William is said to be Welsh and met a German lady while migrating to the U.S. Elizabeth, September 11, 1795-May 14, 1888 living well beyond William, is buried in Blandon. In the 1850 census of Maidencreek William Williams is listed as age 53 and his wife Elizabeth 54. If this is the William Williams buried at this site, then he could not have been in the Revolutionary War. Descendants adopted and preserve this site.
Gravemarkers and inscriptions: Veteran's plaque
Observations: Indicate a burial in the four comers with indication of a burial large enough for a horse in the very middle. Even though an underground stream seems to run under the center of the site, it would still appear that the horse is buried here. Why would the burials be separated, if not because there was not room next to one another? The new owners had the area landscaped and seeded
and maintain the lawn leading from the road to the site.
