This burial ground has nearly been destroyed several times, nature tends to claim back its earth, and at times developers have tried to cover this history. Several years ago Ashland, through the Historic Commission, paid for materials to construct a treated post and chain fence.
Information from Doris Tatham files 1987. More history on this site, Early History of Holderness should be told as early as 1752, Samuel Lane, the Royal Governor's Surveyor, laid out plans for a new Township to be called Holderness. In the midst of the plans, a square of land containing 4 acres was reserved for a church and has since been called Church Hill. This was to be the center of an inland Municipality. On March 9, 1773, it was votedl, "that there shall be a Grave Yard of the contents of two acres on the East side of Province Road, so called , on the south side of the 100 acre lot owned by Joseph Hix, provided the Prorietors will agree to said spot for the same." The Proprietors did agree and a stone wall was laid around the cemeteryl, Ashland still has the title to the two acres. Mary Cox the wife of Charles Cox the first settlers at Cold Springsl, died in Sept of 1775 at the age of 47 and was the first one to be buried there and possibly the 1st to be buried in Holderness. The next burial was 1810l, Sarah Clark, daughter of John & Jane Clark who was only 6 years old. Capt James Cox and his wife Catherine & Capt Joseph Shepard and his wife Esther Cox are there also. The last burial was in 1903, Miss Louisa Shepard was the grandaughter of Capt and Mrs. Joseph Shepard. She worked as a maid in various homes and peddled needles and thread. She died June 20th 1903 at the age of 86, born in 1827.
