Knowle Hosptial was designed as a psychiatric hospital by the architect J. Harris and was built near Fareham in Hampshire.
The main building still remains although has long been developed into modern apartments and the surrounding buildings have been knocked down to make way for new housing.
The Asylum's graveyard still remains, although now old and it would seem forgotten. Trees are now growing through the graves which has caused the headstones to crack and break.
The paupers graves in the older part of the cemetery were marked with a small metal cross with no names, as there were up to four paupers per grave. Covering each body was a little soil before the next body was laid on top. Sadly many of these simple metal crosses have been stolen over the years so some lay there completely unmarked.
The larger, grander graves belonged to more wealthier patients and also to the hospital staff and are in a slightly better state of repair.
In the newer part of the cemetery the graves of poorer patients were marginally better than the old paupers graves. These were marked with small headstones and had the patients numbers rather than names marked on them. Many have fallen over to the ground over the years.
