The "Fowlkes Family Cemetery @ HYDE PARK Plantation" is located about 50 ft. northeast from the kitchen of the main house.
A 20' x 60' enclosure defined by a decorative, cast-iron fence set into a low stone curb wall. It has approx. 20 grave markers. Most are plain stone markers. The most prominent one is a tall marble obelisk in the southwest corner dedicated to "Paschal Jennings Fowlkes" (1813-1882) who did the renovating & enlarging of the original Federal house.
LINEAGE from "the builder of Hyde Park":
"John A. Fowlkes" (1722-1799) to his son,
"John Field Fowlkes" (1745-1824) to his son,
"John Hall Fowlkes" (1782-1838) to his son,
"Paschal Jennings Fowlkes" (1813-1882) who enlarged & renovated Hyde Park.
The cast-iron gate also bears a plaque with "P. J. Fowlkes" in relief. The obelisk of "Paschal Jennings Fowlkes" (1813-1882) is currently the only visible marker with an inscription. Family records indicate that as late as 1957 the cemetery also included headstones for more than 10 other members of the Fowlkes Family...spanning 5 generations, including "John A. Fowlkes" (1722-1799) who was the original builder & his wife, "Sarah Jennings Fowlkes" (1730-1782) who was the first burial @ the Fowlkes Family Cemetery.
The caretaker of the property shared that during The Civil War that Union soldiers put many of the headstones into the well because Martha Hyde Fowlkes had supplied cotton fabric to the Confederacy.
There is no known evidence for any enslaved workers, employees, or servants being buried on the property.
