This was a cemetery of expediency. The Boxer Rebellion was waging in Peking and the various contingencies were barricaded inside the Legation's walls; out of access to the regular British Cemetery. Fallen soldiers were buried here: French, British, American Marines, and Russian soldiers. Wooden crosses were placed as fast as the bodies were buried.

Looking at maps of the barricaded Legation during the siege, it is possible that they used the Mongol market as this impromptu cemetery, which shared walls with both the British Legation and the Russian Legation, thus explaining why both the British and the Russians claimed ownership of the Cemetery at some point.

There is evidence that proper stones were later set on some of the graves. There is also evidence that some of the Americans were disinterred and taken back to the US. It is unknown at what point the cemetery was destroyed but it was much earlier than the the "Cultural Revolution" when the balance of the foreign cemeteries were destroyed in China.
