The Sacred Heart of Jesus Chapel, sometimes shortened to Jesus Chapel, was commisioned by Elizabeth (nee Blundell) Tempest and was built of stone in the Gothic style. The architect was Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin. It was completed in 1842 and served as a private chapel for the Temple family who lived at Ackworth Grange and for other practitioners of the Catholic faith in the area. The Chapel contained memorial brasses to several members of the Tempest family, some of whom were buried in the chantry on the north side of the Chapel. The Chapel was closed to service in about 1920 and the Tempest family sold the Ackworth Grange property after the Second World War. Chapel furnishings were distributed to other Roman Catholic religious institutions in the area. A brass memorial from the Jesus Chapel dedicated to to Elizabeth Tempest ended up in the Tempest chapel in St Stephen Roman Catholic Church in Skipton North Yorkshire; the Tempest family was originally from Broughton Hall near Skipton. Standing derelict, the Sacred Heart of Jesus Chapel building was demolished in 1963.
