Built between 1220 and 1243, the Nikolaikirche is one of the two oldest churches in Berlin, the other being the Marienkirche on nearby Alexanderplatz. Originally Roman Catholic, the church became a Lutheran church in 1539 as a consequence of the Protestant Reformation. De-consecrated in November 1938, the Nikolaikirche has since served as a museum and concert venue. Heavily damaged by World War II bombing, the church was rebuilt, beginning in 1981, using prewar designs and plans.
