Established in 1910 it developed from the small village cemetery in Schönholz (opened in 1895) to the now larger cemetery in the district of Pankow. The cemetery had to be enlarged quickly in the last years of World War II to facilitate the need for burials of civilian war casualties. It was officially closed on August 1, 2007 and will be turned into a park in around 2037. The entire cemetery now has a size of about 4.4 acres.
There are several numbered cemeteries in Berlin-Pankow, they are differentiated by Roman Numerals I-XII (1-12).
Please note that the graves in Germany are not perpetual. After a certain period of repose (20-30 years) the graves are being leveled and re-used. There is no toxic embalming being done in Germany, so the coffin and the corpse have decomposed naturally. If the family of the deceased decides to purchase another period the duration can be extended by another 30 years.
War Graves are considered memorials and are kept up by the owner of the cemetery. Those are kept forever.
