The church was founded in 1866, and officially opened in 1872.
"The establishment of a mission at Coniston is primarily due to the anxiety of the late Dr. Goss, Bishop of Liverpool, to supply the spiritual requirements of 300 Catholic miners, now, alas, much reduced in numbers, but then dwelling in this picturesque district, and distant no less than sixteen miles from the nearest church. Miss Aglianby, who at that time resided in the neighbourhood, on the banks of Esthwaite Water, generously provided a home and support for the priest during the first few years of the existence of the mission, and before her death made over to his lordship a partial provision for its permanent maintenance. Both church and presbytery were erected from funds raised by subscription throughout the diocese, to which fund, it is needless to add, the good lady herself was a generous contributor. Living in the diocese of Liverpool, her charity was naturally directed to the spiritual wants of the neighbouring miners of Coniston rather than to those of the resident Catholics and summer visitors at Windermere and Ambleside, both situated in the adjacent diocese of Hexham and Newcastle." [From a letter to the Tablet, the international catholic news weekly, 7th November 1885]
The body of the above mentioned Miss Aglionbury is interred at the entrance to the church.
The Liverpool Mercury, Dec 23rd 1886 said "Mr Ruskin has just presented the Church of the Sacred Heart, Coniston, with a handsome stained glass window. The window is triplet in design and has been placed in the west end of the church"
